Map of Port Fairy, VIC 3284

A fishing village at the estuary of the Moyne River‚ Port Fairy today survives on crayfish‚ abalone fishing and tourism. Sealers and whalers used the anchorage as a base in the early years of the 1800’s and James Atkinson subdivided land for a township in 1843‚ making it one of Victoria's oldest settlements. Many of the early buildings remain‚ over 50 classified by the National Trust‚ and these and other interesting places can best be explored following the Historic Walks leaflet available from the information centre. Nature lovers will enjoy a cruise to Lady Julia Percy Island‚ home to one of the largest seal colonies in southern Australia‚ or a walk to Griffiths Island to watch the return of the mutton birds at dusk to feed their young (September to May).
