The two towns are separated by the Goulburn River which forms this busy regional centre - the city of Shepparton lies east of the river, while the town of Mooroopna lies 4 kilometres away on the other side. At one time the settlements were isolated from each other by the river flood plain, but now they are joined by a causeway. The towns are at the centre of a large irrigation scheme that covers thousands of hectares of the surrounding fertile river flats, which are devoted to growing fruit and vegetables and to the dairy industry.
