Western Australia's third oldest European settlement, Augusta stands on the slopes of Hardy Inlet in an almost perfect setting overlooking the Blackwood River, the Southern Ocean and rolling wooded countryside. The town is particularly rich in historic associations, with a museum in the main street preserving memorabilia from the Augusta-Margaret River region.
A short drive from Augusta, Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse stands at the most south-westerly point of the mainland, where the Indian and Southern oceans meet. One of the country's key meteorological stations, the lighthouse stands 39 metres high and its light can be seen 32 kilometres out to sea.
