Fremantle‚ known as 'Freo'‚ is Perth's port and maritime playground‚ located just twenty minutes from the capital on the mouth of the Swan River. It has a lively street life‚ a thriving café culture and an alternative arts scene amidst the workings of a fully functional port.
With more heritage listed buildings than anywhere else in the state‚ Fremantle gives the visitor an idea of what a port streetscape looked like over 100 years ago. Many of these buildings house attractions‚ including the famous Fremantle Markets (1897)‚ classified by the National Trust. Here visitors will find 150 stalls with crafts‚ clothes‚ fresh food and lots of treasures. Fremantle has several museums that focus on different areas of interest‚ from the military to energy. Other attractions are maritime in nature‚ such as the Shipwreck Museum and Maritime Museum‚ or a visit to Fremantle Port.
