Geraldton's sandy white beaches, excellent fishing and year-round sunny climate combine to ensure that this busy city is one of Western Australia's most popular winter holiday resorts. Located on Champion Bay, the city is the key port and administration centre for the Midwest, with exports including grain, ore and mineral sands. Rock lobsters worth millions of dollars annually are also exported.
Geraldton's tourist bureau in Chapman Road is housed in the historic Bill Sewell Complex. Built in 1887 as the Victoria District Hospital, the building was also used as a regional prison before being restored and converted into a tourist bureau in 1988. The Old Gaol Craft Centre nearby is an excellent outlet for local craft. Also worth visiting is Geraldton's most spectacular building, St Francis Xavier Cathedral, an amazing Byzantine-style church designed by the architect priest Monsignor John Hawes.
