Once a service centre for the Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie goldfields, with a brief goldrush of its own in 1888, Southern Cross is today the largest town in the Yilgarn Shire. Land for farming was released in the early 1920's and mixed farming (mainly cereals) and mining are now the chief industries of the shire.
Pioneers are buried in the Old Cemetery, off the Great Eastern Highway, which has been refurbished as a pioneer memorial by the Southern Cross Historical Society. The Society also operates the Historical Museum in the original courthouse.
The district boasts a number of rocky outcrops and other interesting spots that make ideal picnic sites, including Hunts Soak, constructed by convicts in 1865 next to Lake Koorkoordine. Wildflowers are prolific in the region and a scenic drive or walk is especially rewarding in the spring and early summer.
