York is primarily an agricultural town with tourism making an important contribution to the local economy: visitors generally come to this historic town to soak up the atmosphere created by the old homes, public buildings, parks, gardens and the Avon River.
Museums occupy many historic buildings. York Motor Museum, in Avon Terrace, is one. This excellent museum houses more than 200 classic and vintage cars, motorcycles and horse-drawn vehicles. In the 1840's the Residency Museum was home to the resident magistrate. Now it holds a collection of records of early colonial life. York's splendid Town Hall, home of the York Visitor Centre, and the unusual two-storey Railway Station are both historically interesting and worth a look. For a break from museums, try a picnic in Avon Park beside the river.
