Map of Burnie, TAS 7320

Burnie (pirinilaplu/palawa kani: pataway) is a port city in Tasmania, Australia, located in Emu Bay on the north-west coast, 47 kilometres (29 mi) west from Devonport and 17 kilometres (11 mi) east from Wynyard. With an urban population of 19,550 in 2019, Burnie is the fourth largest city in Tasmania, serving as a major port for north-western agricultural and mining industries.

Founded in 1827 as Emu Bay, Burnie's name, attributed by early settlers, arose from their sighting of emus along the riverbanks, despite lacking a direct correlation with the bird itself in Aboriginal nomenclature. The township was renamed Burnie in November 1842, after William Burnie, then director of the Van Diemen's Land Company.Burnie is governed by the City of Burnie local government area.
